Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it.
Proverbs 8:33
First Sunday After Christmas
The early morning chill of fall is a reminder that Advent is on the horizon. As we look forward to this great time of joy and celebration in Christ, I lament the changes in our church post-Covid.
Recently, I was following the closing worship service at another district's Annual Conference. The worshipers recited The Apostles Creed. My generation learned Creed as children and now I found myself struggling to follow along. At first, I blamed the struggle on my aging and then I surmised it more than likely is the result of our not using it in service any longer. We also would stand and sing the hymn of preparation just before the sermon. I love being back in my church and I also miss these rituals that, to many, are part of being an African Methodist.
I believe in God, the Father, almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord... Ritual and liturgy are good for the body and soul.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant us wisdom to include and exclude the language of our ancestors throughout our worship. Amen
